Go Jin and Gam-rae | Review

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

Rating - ⭐⭐⭐1/2

"After only one day's performance in this new village, someone has destroyed Go Jin and his musical troupe's instruments. His search for the culprit leads him to Gam-rae, the Taoist master of the village. Endowed with supernatural gifts, suspicion often falls on him. But Go Jin soon finds that there is much more to this man than his gifts, as he becomes caught in the middle of Gam-rae's own supernatural battle."

Go Jin and Gam-rae is a BL webtoon by Pingpu.

I didn't really know much about this series going into it, but I was in the mood for a period piece and reviews for this were positive. I don't have much to say in this review but will go into some details, starting with the art.

The art isn't quite the same as most manhwas tend to be. Instead, it looks more like an anime. I was fine with the style but I did wish for Go Jin's face to be more expressive as he had a straight face most of the time.

As for the plot, it is rather formulaic. There is a conflict that happens in each season, but interwoven is the tender romance between Go Jin and Gam-rae that builds and gets stronger. One thing I did really like about this was the moments where there were no words on the panels, and it was just a tender moment between the two of them. This is also shonen ai, so there are no sex scenes. That means that there is more focus on the connection between the two.

This is a pretty simple story though and easy to get through, but I do wish there was a bit more to it. A pretty substantial amount of time passes in this, and I think it could have benefited from adding some more in between to make up for that.

I don't actually know if this series is finished, or if the author is going to come out with a surprise season.

This can be read on Lezhin, but keep in mind that only the prologue and rotating episodes are free to read.
